Choosing a preschool/school can be difficult and the most popular preschools often have long waiting times.
This also applies to the most popular primary schools, where competition is sometimes even tougher. We therefore recommend that you apply extremely early, so as not to close any doors.
Choosing a pre-school/school
When choosing a nursery school, there are a number of things, in addition to proximity to work and home, you need to take into account. These include:
- Profile and focus
- Quality of food
- Staff and authorisations
- Staff density
- The size of the pre-school
- Proximity to green areas
It is difficult to give generalised recommendations for choosing a preschool. The choice is extremely personal. Is it important to you that your child are outdoors a lot, that the food is vegetarian, or that the staff are a certain way. We recommend that you Google your local area and read up on the interesting pre-schools via City of Stockholm website for choosing a preschool.
Last but not least, you should always go out and visit the pre-schools in question. Talk to the staff and get a feel for the environment.
With a nanny from Hey Kiddo, it's easy to make ends meet. Among other things, we can pick up from kindergarten.
When it's time for the 'real' school
- Ask friends and acquaintances with school-age children what they think of their schools and Google around, but do it at an early age. Start before you have your child to avoid missing any opportunities.
- Will you stay in the same place when your children start school, or are you planning to move? If you are unsure, we recommend that you look for school places both where you live and where you are thinking of moving.
- On each school's website, you can find information on what the application process is like for that particular school. Choose a couple of schools you want your children to attend and read up on how and when to apply for a place.
The extremely popular Carlssons Skola in Östermalm you must apply in principle on the day your child is born and the application to the Manila Campus at Djurgården opens on the day your child turns one, so you need to be quick. Both of these schools are considered by many to be the very best in Sweden, but there are plenty of good schools in Stockholm. There are also more specialised schools that are extremely attractive, including Adolf Fredrik's Music Classes which provides a first-class education with musical elements every day for pupils in grades 4-9.
