Why did you choose to work as a nanny?
I have always enjoyed children and have looked after both younger siblings and cousins ever since I was younger. When I got the chance to work as a nanny at Hey Kiddo, it felt just right. I wanted a job that was both fun and meaningful, where I can actually help families in everyday life.
What does a typical day look like for you?
It varies a lot, and that's probably what I like most. Some days I pick up the kids from preschool and we go home and play or make a snack. On other days, I might help with evening routines like bedtime or homework. For me, it's important that the children feel that I'm there for them and that the parents can feel safe when I take over.
What do you think is the best thing about being a nanny?
The best part is the relationships. When the children are happy that I'm coming, or when they tell me something they've been longing to share with me, it feels so valuable. You get to be part of their everyday lives, and that makes the job special.
What qualities do you think are important in a nanny?
I think it's a lot about being calm and responsive. Children notice immediately if you're stressed or not present, so it's important to be able to take it at their pace. It's also important to be consistent but playful at the same time. A nanny becomes a part of the children's everyday lives, so you need to be able to set limits and have fun together.
Do you have any tips for families thinking about hiring a nanny or babysitter?
Absolutely! I would say:
- Be clear about what you need help with.
- Tell us about the family routines, so it will be easier for us nannies to come in and do the right thing from the start.
- Involve children in the process so that they feel safe.
How is the job of a nanny different from other childcare?
I would say it's very much about continuity. When a family has a nanny, like me for example, the children have someone they see regularly and can build a relationship with. It creates stability, and it shows in the way children relax and recognise routines.
