Excursion tips for children in Stockholm

Tip walk for children

The summer holidays are fast approaching! The sun is shining and it's warm, so it's time to get out into the beautiful weather.

Stockholm offers many different options for excursions and adventures for children, which can be helpful for planning activities for the summer holidays for children. These can include day trips to the countryside, play and adventure - both in the city of Stockholm and near Stockholm. Here are HeyKiddo's tips on the best places to go in Stockholm for children, which you can visit with your family or babysitter during the summer holidays.

Outdoor adventures for children

Children like adventure, playing and discovering. During the summer, they prefer to spend time outdoors, preferably in nature. Playing and adventuring in nature is also good and important for children's well-being. There are a number of zoos and/or activity centres in Stockholm specifically designed for children that offer outdoor activities such as animal watching, carousel rides, playgrounds, pony rides, rock climbing and tip rounds - all in one place!

  • Skansen is probably Stockholm's best-known (and oldest) open-air museum, both for locals and tourists. Skansen offers many kinds of adventures and experiences for children, such as petting animals, watching singing and music performances, playing in Ekorrparken, having a picnic in the garden, riding carousels in the miniature forest, riding a pony or visiting the Skansen Aquarium. Yes, the list is long and there are many more activities that Skansen offers. There is something for everyone and for children of all ages. Skansen is a perfect destination for a full-day adventure, especially if you want to try most of the activities.
  • Tjäderstigen (Tyresta National Park) is a reasonably long adventure trail full of various outdoor activities for children and a permanent tip trail. What's more, it's free, and there's space for barbecues. You start at the Tjäderstigen trail by taking a booklet to answer the questions posed along the eleven stations on the trail. The aim is for the children to work out the code word formed by all the correct answers. If you hand in the code word at Naturum in Tyresta National Park, you get a Tjäderstigen diploma to take home! Tjäderstigen is a total of 1.3 kilometres long and there are climbing nets, small suspension bridges, balance beams and many other activities along the trail. It's a suitable adventure for children who like climbing and exploring the forest.
  • Siggesta Gård is a popular outdoor activity centre where you can visit animals, but also try lots of different activities involving climbing, running and hanging out - perfect for active children with lots of energy. There's mini golf, football golf, disc golf and a forest obstacle course. There's also a sandpit with a playhouse for quiet play. Siggersta Gård offers many fun adventures and outdoor activities for children of all ages in a beautiful environment.

Stockholm's best outdoor playgrounds

Sometimes it can be a bit boring to have the same old playground near where you live or the school playground. Luckily, there are many exciting playgrounds in Stockholm with different concepts that are not to be missed in the summer of 2023. There is something for everyone and for children of all ages. Visiting a new playground, and maybe even bringing a packed lunch or a coffee, is an easy and fun day out for children. And you don't have to travel far - perfect for a staycation!

  • Årstabergsparken is an adventure playground in the south designed by an architect. It is located on a very large area and consists of four different parts: Rävskogen, Sjövikskröken, Kråkberget and Blockriket. There are playgrounds, activity areas, nature playgrounds, viewing towers, barbecue areas, outdoor gyms and walking trails - everything you could possibly need for a day out and much more!
  • Ivar Lo's park is one of Stockholm's most beloved playgrounds. This park has a "country" theme, as you can see from the colourful little wooden cabins and animals that you can play in and climb on. Ivar Lo's park is located on Mariaberget, which offers a very beautiful view of the northern coast of Södermalm, and is also a great place for picnics.
  • Bryggartäppan is located in Södermalm and is a playground that represents what the neighbourhood looked like in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are small houses for workers and factories that create a unique environment for children to play in and explore. There is also a lovely summer café nearby that serves waffles.

Excursions for children in the centre of Stockholm

If you don't want to go far or take the car to travel, there are also more central options for day trips with children in Stockholm. These are great tips for those who live in the centre or who don't want to plan too much for the day trip. It may also be that you want to vary from adventures and excursions in nature or the forest. The advantage of activities found more centrally in Stockholm is that there is something for both young and old, so that the whole family can have fun.

  • Gröna Lund is Sweden's most famous funfair and a must for summer holidays. If you want a day trip, you can spend it at Gröna Lund and ride carousels and try carnival games. At Gröna Lund you will find something fun for everyone, children of all ages and adults. There are also restaurants and cafés, but you can also bring a packed lunch.
  • Eriksdalsbadet has an outdoor pool for both children and adults. It is a very nice swimming area in a cosy neighbourhood, where you can also buy ice cream after you have finished swimming and go for a walk along the Tantolunden allotments. The cute little allotment houses offer a nice view.
  • Take a boat trip out in the archipelago at Fjäderholmarna in Lidingö municipality. It's not that far out into the archipelago but you can get the same experience. Here you have the opportunity for a day trip packed with activities such as swimming, playing in the playground, taking in the beautiful sea view, eating in the nearby restaurants and of course experiencing the archipelago.
