Learning through play - Educational childcare
Sitting down to do your homework after a long day at school doesn't always feel very motivating. At the same time, everything else around you is pulling and pulling. Thoughts of toys, TVs and tablets buzz in your head. But how can you make learning more fun, how can you learn outside the classroom? Teacher Hans Lernhagen explains how we can do this by "play" in all sorts of everyday situations.
You are sitting at home on a Wednesday evening with the babysitter, you have just baked buns and you have to make sure that everyone gets the same number. You count how many buns there are, how many people will eat the buns and then you divide the number of buns by the number of people who will eat. Without thinking about it, you have used maths to work out how many each person should get.
Knowledge in everyday life
We use the skills we have learnt all the time, both at school and in other activities such as baking, playing, reading and playing.
Hans Lernhagen has been a teacher for 25 years, making him something of an expert in blending play and learning.
- "Over the years, the students and I have created great theatre performances, participated in carpet competitions, built medieval bridges in stone, built Viking houses in wood, built medieval cities in cardboard, and participated in film festivals, the list is long, but it is this type of mission that engages and creates joy in learning and discovering," he says.
So once home with the babysitter, there's a smorgasbord of educational games and activities to take part in. Build legos or huts in the forest. Make a film or a charade and you've learned something, used skills and become smarter; just by playing.
- "Play also provides something else important, and that is balance and body awareness, which is a very important component for children to develop into strong and stable people," Hans concludes.
