Can't think of a fun indoor activity?
Here are simple drawing exercises for children to try step by step. Drawing is always fun but the result may not always be what you wanted - that's why drawing exercises are a great activity that you as a parent or babysitting can do with children, for example at home after school. The concept of drawing exercises is straightforward; there are only a few simple steps to follow in order to get a nice drawing picture. Of course, the steps involve the basic shapes such as circle, triangle and square, which children of most ages can draw without help. There are several advantages to following drawing exercises instead of drawing freely:
- it requires you to spend a certain amount of time on the activity, so that you don't finish after the first attempt,
- it involves simple instructions that children can easily follow, leading to more independent work,
- it is an exercise in both concentration and creativity,
- you learn to draw, and
- you can easily get a good result.
How to draw with drawing exercises?
The first thing you need is of course paper and pencil. A smart tip is to draw all the steps with a pencil, which can easily be erased if you happen to draw wrongly, and then finally start colouring the picture. Before you start, you can also practise the basic shapes together, i.e. circle, triangle, square, etc. so that the child can then work more independently. Drawing exercises for children can be found in books that you can buy (tip!) but many can also be found online. Below are 5 examples of fun drawing exercises for children:
1. cat
A classic when it comes to drawing exercises because of its simple shapes is the cat. This is just one of many ways you can draw a cat. The cat is a good exercise to do first if you are not good at drawing or if you have not done drawing exercises before.
2. flower
Another beginner-friendly drawing exercise for children is the flower, and this comes in many different varieties, such as rose or tulip. The shapes you need to master to draw this flower are circle and triangle - if the stem is too difficult to draw, you can skip it.
3. birds
If you're looking for slightly more difficult drawing exercises for children that might be more suited to older children, the bird is a good one. Here, the basic shapes are not as clear and the picture is more detailed, so it takes a little more work and concentration to draw the bird. A simpler variant is usually the owl.
4. Aeroplanes
The aeroplane requires quite few steps (6) but it can be difficult to draw all the details. For example, you can skip the last step and start colouring the plane at step 5.
5. cupcake
Cupcakes, or muffins, can also be a bit more difficult. It consists of 9 steps, but as long as you follow the exercise step by step, you should be fine! Remember, you can always skip the details if they are too difficult to draw, such as the sprinkles.
