We are now approaching the end of school and a long and sunny summer holiday. Find inspiration and tips on 15 fun summer holiday activities for young and old.
Children usually enjoy the summer holidays when you take time off from homework, early mornings, boring weather and you have all the time in the world to do what you like. You can cycle, play, run around and have fun! But sometimes summer holidays can feel too long because you don't always know what to do or how to spend all your time. There are lots of fun summer holiday activities for children that you can do, either with your family, with your babysitting or by themselves with their friends. Hey Kiddo therefore suggests 15 fun activities to do with children during the summer holidays.
15 summer holiday activities for young and old
1. Picking strawberries
Summer and late summer are berry season - so take the opportunity to pick and eat lots of berries. Berries are both healthy and tasty. If you grows strawberries at home in the garden, this is a perfect activity to do with the kids, or you can go together to the nearest pick-your-own. A tasty and fun activity!
2. Building a sandcastle
You can build a sandcastle on the beach or simply in the sandpit of the playground. Building sandcastles is a fun and creative activity that can also require co-operation. So gather your buckets, shovels and other tools and get out there to build a really nice sandcastle.
3. play miniature golf
Miniature golf is much easier - and more fun - than regular golf. Take the opportunity to play mini-golf with the kids on a sunny day and try out all the quirky (some difficult, some easy) courses. You can either compete or just have fun together.
4. cycling
Cycle down the street or neighbourhood where you live or go for a longer bike ride, maybe in the park or a nature reserve? Cycling is a popular activity during the summer, so go out for a bike ride too!
5. Make your own ice cream
Making popsicles is super easy and a favourite activity among kids. There are many recipes, but basically you need water, a flavouring and maybe some sugar. Then it goes in the freezer. There's nothing better on a hot summer day than a popsicle!
6. Grilling sausages
Many people have barbecues during the summer, especially with family and friends. A cosy summer holiday activity is to grill sausages with the children in the park or somewhere else where there is a barbecue. Grilling sausages is easy; all you need are sausages, sausage rolls, ketchup and mustard. A good tip is to take this with you to the playground for grilling - that way the children can play first and then grill.
7. Bake a strawberry cake
Strawberry cake is a classic summer cake, but you can really bake any cake. When baking with children, you may want to simplify the process and buy ready-made cake bases, for example. Then just add the cake base, vanilla cream, strawberry jam, cream and strawberries. Simple and delicious.
8. Have a water war
On a particularly hot summer day, you might need to cool down a bit, especially children who are often on the move. Water wars are therefore a fun and practical activity. Just fill balloons with water, put on your swimwear and it's war!
9. campa
You don't have to go to a campsite to camp - you can camp in your garden, on your balcony or on your trampoline. Sun cream is something that is important to have with you for a long day outdoors if you are camping. Camping is a fun activity to do together on warmer evenings to sleep under the stars and stargaze. You might recognise certain star constellations, such as the Big Dipper, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.
10. Fishing
You don't need real, professional fishing gear to fish - just tie a rope to a stick and let the kids fish. Then just let your imagination take over. This can be a great opportunity for children to be out in nature, perhaps by a river or lake, and just relax and enjoy nature.
11. Borrow books from the library
Many people think that summer holidays are nice because they get out of school, but the holidays can be a good opportunity to read books that you actually like and are interested in. One tip is to take your children to the library and let them take their time to browse through the books. Perhaps they will find new favourites that will encourage them to read?
12. play football
Play football or some other ball game. It's usually more fun if there are a few of you, so invite some friends to join in. If you don't have a football pitch nearby, you can play football in your garden, park or other open space. You can use stones or sticks to mark out the goals. Ball sports are one of many fun summer activities, which ball sport is your favourite?
13. picking flowers
Go to a meadow, forest or somewhere else where you can pick flowers and make a nice bouquet. Either the children can make their own bouquet or you can make one together. One tip is to take wire or steel wire with you to make flower garlands, which can be nice to hang up.
14. Visit a farm
During the summer, for example, cows are often out grazing. Visiting a farm can be an excursion, especially for children living in the city centre. Take a packed lunch and visit the nearest farm to see cows, horses, sheep and chickens. Maybe you can pet and feed them?
15. Playing cards or board games
Playing games is something you can do both indoors and outdoors, so it's a suitable activity for both rainy and sunny summer days. Try a new exciting board game, or google for new card games. Or why not build a house of cards?
